Expanding the Vertical Playbook: Sports Podcasts
PLLAY's prediction mechanic started with esports match outcomes. This month it extended to a format that fits surprisingly well: sports podcasts.
PLLAY's prediction mechanic — an audience puts skill-weighted stake behind what they think will happen next — was built around esports match outcomes first, because that's where the platform started. This month it extended to a format that turns out to fit the same mechanic surprisingly well: sports podcasts.
A sports podcast audience already has informed opinions about what a host will predict, which take will land, or how a debate segment resolves — the same kind of engaged, knowledgeable audience that makes a gaming prediction pool work. The Sports Podcast format shipped this month with its own onboarding flow tailored to podcast-format shows rather than a repurposed gaming flow — built and running on beta rails, opening to creators through a waitlist rather than a general-availability launch.
A trivia-bank feature shipped alongside it — a bank of prediction-ready questions built for podcast hosts, so launching a pool doesn't require a host to invent a prompt on the spot mid-episode the way a gaming creator might react to a live match moment. It's a small feature, but it's the difference between a format working in theory and a host actually using it on air.
It's the platform's second vertical to be built after Gaming, opening carefully: sports sits closer to traditional sports betting than PLLAY's other verticals, so predictions here are scoped to show-meta calls about the episode itself, not game outcomes. DJ & Music, Podcasters more broadly, and Live Shopping are still on the roadmap as upcoming verticals. Each one gets built the same way Sports Podcasts did: starting from what makes that audience's engagement genuinely predictable, not just porting the gaming flow and hoping it fits.
